Featured Book & Review -
⭐⭐⭐⭐
4 1/2 bubblegums, but I can’t find a 1/2 star emoji. 🤷 Very adorable and cozy read, perfect for a room in the corner :-) I first read Corner as an ARC on Edelweiss, but I could definitely see myself reading this to my own children. Very warm and cozy illustrations that fit the themes of comfort and comfort zones, and imagination i.e., creatively imagining oneself both in and out of the limits and comforts of solitude (almost wordlessly). There’s some really great (artistic) talent out of South Korea!
“corner” Search -
I actually found Walk Me to the Corner by typing “corner” into the search bar on my local library’s web page, because I was looking for Corner to review on my library account. (I couldn’t find it btw)
I usually don’t like reading & promoting literature with themes of homosexuality, but I might and have if what’s being explored is greater than the topic of homosexuality (see Ghost Ride by Zane). I was also hesitant because I saw that (the big 5 publisher) Macmillan was involved (which is definitely not indie), but I think, as is the case with many small independent presses, that the publisher Drawn & Quarterly might only use Macmillan for distribution.
Cover Love ❤️
I like to give cover love, especially since covers that I may think are bitchin’ are not necessarily titles that I’m interested in reading…so I like to show at least some modicum of love.
I don’t think I’ll go further than the bitchin’ covers of What Small Sound and Sugar Work, but I might just with Theophanies, which’ll be my first go-round with Alice James Books (which I’ve noticed has some really good-looking books). Same with Red Hen Press (What Small Sound), which I had a great go-round with (with Only the Cat Knows by Ruyan Meng).
Authors take note!
I’m actually surprised by this cover spread myself; I’m currently reading Notes from a Cannibalist, haven’t yet read A Whore’s Song, and started with the masterpiece MEAT. And what I noticed each time I went back is that there was a different cover…and they’re all good-looking covers!
This is a good example of marketing 101 and never resting (on one’s laurels) as an independent author: never letting your books die, coming back around to re-vamp, re-tool and, yes, re-cover (pun intended).
To Read -
These are some cool covers too, particularly Shadow Drive, which I’ve got my eye on, particularly. But, really, I’ve got my eye on all of these, even Algo, algún día, which is out of Viking Books for Young Readers, an imprint of Penguin (boo, hiss). I’d like to buy the hardcover book though; I want to read all of these. We’ll see, algún día…
Happy April! 📚
